THE QUICK ANSWER

What Is Cupping Therapy:

Cupping is a massage technique that uses cups to create gentle suction on the skin. Most massage strokes press into the muscle. Cupping does the opposite and lifts the tissue, which many guests describe as a deep stretch followed by a warm, loosened feeling. Cupping massage at Palm Spa is simple: pick any massage, add cupping, and your therapist places the cups on your back during the session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often about cupping therapy.

Cupping uses suction to lift the skin and the tissue under it. Guests report short-term relief from neck and shoulder tightness, looser muscles and more blood flow to the area, and often describe a deep stretch with a warm, loosened feeling afterward. Research on cupping is still limited and mixed, so we offer it for relaxation and comfort, not as a medical treatment.

Your therapist places a plastic cup on your back and pulls the air out with a hand pump. The suction gently lifts the skin and muscle into the cup. The cups stay a few minutes, then your therapist releases them. Researchers are still studying why people feel looser afterward.

Most guests feel pulling or tightness, not sharp pain. Your therapist sets the suction by hand, so you can ask for lighter or stronger any time. Sharp pain means tell us right away.

Often, yes. Cupping can leave round pink, red or deep purple marks where the cups sat. They look like bruises, are not painful for most people, and usually fade within about one to two weeks. Sometimes a blister forms on a mark, from strong suction or sensitive skin. Do not pop it, and call us if it hurts or looks infected. If you have a wedding, photo shoot or swim day coming up, tell us. We can adjust the suction or skip cupping.

Cupping is considered low risk for most healthy adults when a trained therapist uses clean equipment. Possible side effects include marks, mild soreness, tiredness, mild headache or lightheadedness, blisters and itchy skin. See Check With Us First above for who should skip it, and call us at (385) 567-6360 if you are unsure.

We do not recommend it. Researchers know little about cupping during pregnancy. Our Prenatal Massage is the better choice.

Cupping is a $20 add-on to any massage. It is not sold on its own.

Dry cupping on the back, with plastic cups and a hand pump. We do not offer fire cupping, glass cups or wet cupping, which cuts the skin.

No. Cupping is an add-on, and it works alongside massage. For a tight back, many guests choose a Deep Tissue Massage with cupping. Many providers use cupping as a complement to other care, not a substitute.

It may feel good on a tight back, and some studies report less pain, but the research is mixed, so we cannot promise results. For sudden or ongoing back pain, please see your doctor. We are a spa, not a medical clinic, and we do not diagnose or treat conditions.

Many providers wait until marks have faded before cupping the same area again. Your therapist will check your back first and advise you.

Keep your back warm, drink more water and keep it easy and relaxed. Skip hot baths, hot showers, cold showers, hot tubs, heavy weight lifting and running or other strong activity. Mild soreness, tiredness and round marks are normal. See What Is Normal After Cupping below for the full list and when to call us.
